Expression of Interest (EOI) and subclass 189 visa

An Expression of Interest (EOI) must be submitted for the Skilled – Independent subclass 189 visa Points-tested stream. An EOI can be submitted through SkillSelect on the immigration department’s website.

A minimum of 60 points is required and are based on several factors/criteria (e.g. age, English language ability, overseas and Australian work experience in the nominated occupation, education etc.). SkillSelect will estimate the amount of points scored for each relevant factor.

Before submitting an EOI application, it is advisable to obtain any documents you may need to help support the points scored in your EOI application. This is because if you are invited to apply for a Skilled Independent subclass 189 visa, the information on your EOI must be correct at the time the invitation is issued.

It does not cost anything to submit an EOI and you are kept in SkillSelect system for 2 years where you can update any changes in circumstance. This may result in you receiving a higher or lower point score and therefore affect your ranking against the other applicants in SkillSelect.

You must be issued an invitation by DIBP before you can apply for a subclass 189 visa.
