Partner visa - Immigration's average processing times for February 2018

Immigration advises that the current processing time for subclass 820 partner visa application is approximately 12 to 18 months and for subclass 801 partner visa application is approximately 18 to 23 months. This is an estimate only as processing can be affected by volume of applications received, processing prioritises, staffing, application completeness, any requests for further information and if it was an online or paper-based application.

Processing times are generally updated on a monthly basis and can be check at: https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/about/access-accountability/service-standards/global-visa-citizenship-processing-times

Immigration shows processing times as a range. The first number is the time it takes for a decision to be made on 75% of partner visa applications. The second number is the time it takes for a decision to be made on 90% of partner visa applications.

This time range is how long it is taking Immigration globally to process partner visa applications from the date they have received it. Generally, process applications in the order Immigration have receive them, and will updated each month.

However, based on our client’s current partner visa grant emails Smart Australian Visas are happy to report we are finding subclass 820 partner visa that were lodged in June 2017 and subclass 801 partner visa that were lodged in September 2017 are being processing. This is several months less than Immigration’s forecasted timeframes.

Partner visas will certainly take a longer time to be processed if all the required forms have been filled out incorrectly or have not been submitted and if all the required documents have not been provided to Immigration. Actually, this can cause refusals because decision’s may be made based on the information and documentation that you provide at the time of lodgement.

If your application is severally lacking in supporting documents, Immigration may decide to refuse your partner visa application. This can happen due to missing information or you not supplying them with enough evidence.

If you think of it from Immigration’s point of view – How are they meant to make an informed decision on you, your partner and your relationship, if the mandatory documents and forms are absent and your application is low on proof. It is the responsibility of the applicant and sponsor to give Immigration the right forms, documents, information and enough evidence to prove you, your partner and your relationship undeniably meet the requirements and your application is steadfast.

How your application was put together will affect Immigration decision. If your application was presented poorly and is very low on evidence, the results will reflect badly on you. If your application was presented comprehensively with the correct documents, tons of information and is bursting with evidence, a successful result will follow.

Making your application ‘decision-ready’ can significantly cut down the wait time. Partner visa application must be fully complete and extensively supported through evidence and supporting documents. Time can be saved by attaching all forms and documents when you have lodged your partner visa application.

Where possible any required character checks should be completed just before your intended lodgement date for your partner visa. Checks for health can be completed 4-8 weeks after lodgement.

Individual circumstances can also have an effect. If your case is straightforward, it may expedite and advance your placement but if your situation is quite complex it may prolong or hinder the processing times for Partner visa applications.

Delays will be cause if Immigration request for more information, forms or documents. It is very important to respond to these requests quickly and within the timeframe provided. If not, a refusal may be made.

Do not assume Immigration will always inform you that your partner visa application needs more. It is recommended to ensure all the forms and documents have been attached at the time of application.
